Measuring the Soil Water Retention Curve with the Stevens pF Matric Potential Sensor and Hydra Probe II Soil Moisture Sensor

The Stevens pF Sensor is a unique matric potential probe, which is used to measure the soil water potential of a soil - the force with which water is held within the soil and how much energy is needed to overcome this force to extract water from the soil.

Unlike traditional tensiometers such as gypsum blocks, the Stevens pF Sensor utilizes a patented heating element to measure soil water potential, giving it a range of 10,000,000 hPa to 0 hPa, which is 1,000 times the measurement range of typical sensors.

Measuring the soil matric potential offers advanced soil measurement opportunities, especially when combined with a sensor that measures soil water content, such as the Stevens Hydra Probe II.

Learn more about how the pF sensor works and how to measure a soil water potential curve utilizing it together with the Hydra Probe II. Continue reading...

Metric Staff Gages Available from Stevens Water

Stevens Water is the largest supplier of unique and custom staff gages, including metric unit gages, flow measurement, slopes, and more

The original Stevens Water staff gage designs have become the standard styles for many agencies including the USGS. Commonly used gages include Style A, Style C, Style E, and Style I gages.

For metric applications, Stevens also offers the Style M staff gage, which offers graduation marks every centimeter and numbering every decimeter. The physical size of the gage is 65mm wide by 1 meter in length.

Custom gages can also be designed by Stevens Water, allowing for unique colors and designs to be used. Custom gages are perfect for applications such as:

• oversized gages that can be viewed from extreme distances
• gages with finer measurement increments
• mounting on slopes or other non-vertical structures
• visual measurements of flow

Contact Stevens today for more information on staff gages for all of your visual measurement applications.

"Oldest Equipment Contest" Winners Announced

Two Stevens Water customers claim the prize with equipment originally deployed in the 1930s still in operation

Stevens Water Monitoring Systems celebrated our centennial anniversary in 2011, looking back on 100 years of technical innovation and environmental monitoring.

As part of our anniversary year celebrations, we asked our long-time customers to send us pictures and information on the oldest equipment they are still utilizing in daily operations. We received many entries and enjoyed the opportunity to see how customers are using our products, both new and old.

Congratulations go out to both Ernest (Ameren Missouri) and Darrell (Oregon District 18 Watermaster) who sent in pictures and stories of equipment from the 1930s, still in operation to this day!

On the left is a circa 1938 Stevens Type A-35 chart recorder, still in use by the Oregon District 18 Watermaster to monitor Scoggins Creek, above Hagg Lake. Pictured to the right is a circa 1931 Type PAV continuous recorder, connected to indicators showing the head and tail levels at the Bagnell Dam on the Osage River in central Missouri.

Again, a big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who sent in pictures and information. Our great customers have allowed Stevens to grow and thrive over the past 100 years, and we look forward to many more years of dedication to providing the best solutions, sensors, and systems to meet our customers' monitoring and data collection needs.
