For more than one hundred years, knowing and predicting stream flow has been very important for water managers, not only to provide enough water for human consumption, but to protect the aquatic habitats in our natural water ways as well. Since the 1970s, the USDA NRCS has set up SNOTEL sites in every western state, including Alaska, to help better predict available water resources in the western United States.

Weather Monitoring Instrumentation

Precipitation Gages

Precipitation gages, such as the industry-standard Tipping Bucket Precipitation Gage make accurate measurement of rainfall and snowfall levels in remote environments an easy addition to new or existing stations. For applications where high precision accuracy is required, Stevens offers the OTT Pluvio² Precipitation Gage, which offers an accuracy of ±0.1 mm (±0.0039 in.).

Wind Speed and Direction Sensors

Wind speed and direction are important factors to consider when measuring weather, and Stevens offers several types of sensors, from traditional propeller-based sensors to solid state electronic sensors with no moving parts.

Relative Humidity, Temperature, and Atmospheric Pressure

Air temperature and humidity can also have a significant impact on the accuracy of other measurements. The Vaisala HMP155 provides accurate measurement of these parameters in an extremely compact package, which is easily integrated into existing systems. Atmospheric pressure can also be monitored easily and accurately using the Met One Barometric Pressure sensor.
